In a notable shift for Sri Lanka’s tea export market, August 2024 witnessed an increase in tea exports to several countries, while other key markets like Iraq and Turkey saw declines. Iraq retained its position as the largest importer, taking in 21,198 MT, though this represents a slight dip from 22,189 MT in 2023.
Russia also remained a top destination, with 16,518 MT, up marginally from 16,052 MT last year. However, the standout performer is the UAE, which saw an impressive growth in imports, rising from 11,721 MT in 2023 to 15,810 MT in 2024, reflecting a strong demand for Ceylon Tea in the Middle East.
Iran, too, showcased a remarkable surge, nearly doubling its intake from 3,405 MT in 2023 to 7,876 MT this year, potentially hinting at an evolving trade dynamic despite ongoing global economic challenges. On the other hand, Turkey saw a significant drop in imports, falling from 20,339 MT last year to 12,205 MT in 2024 – a potential result of economic factors or shifts in local market preferences.
Other notable increases include Saudi Arabia, which imported 5,989 MT compared to 4,498 MT in 2023, and Chile, which saw a rise from 4,952 MT to 5,620 MT. Meanwhile, China, one of the world’s largest tea producers, slightly increased its imports of Sri Lankan tea, from 7,899 MT in 2023 to 8,111 MT in 2024.
With several markets showing a rising interest in Ceylon Tea, Sri Lanka’s export landscape continues to evolve, demonstrating resilience in some regions despite challenges in others. This diversified demand across regions could play a critical role in stabilizing the island’s tea economy as global conditions remain volatile.
